The Pangong Lake is situated at 14,500 feet (4,267 m). A long narrow basin of inland drainage, hardly six to seven kilometers at its widest point and over 130 km long. It is bisected by international border between India and China. Spangmik, the farthest point to which foreigners are permitted, is only some seven km. along the southern shore from the head of the lake, but it affords spectacular views of the mountains of the Changchenmo range to the north, their reflections shimmering in the ever-changing blues and greens of the lake’s brackish waters. Above Spangmik are the glaciers and snowcapped peaks of the Pangong range.
A haven for wild life and wilderness enthusiast. Some of the animals commonly seen around the resort are Asiatic Wild Ass, the Kiang (equus Kiang), Blue Sheep (pseudois nayaur), Himalayan marmot (marmota bobak) etc. The Tibetan Argali (ovis ammon hodgsoni), the Ladakh urial (ovis vignei), the Wild Yak (bos grunniens) and the Tibetan Antelope (pantholops hodgsoni) are more elusive and require some effort to be observed. Among the birds the rare Black-necked Crane ( grus nigricollis) can be observed in the nearby Chushul marsh lands. Bar-headed Goose (anser indicus) and the Ruddy Shelduck (tadorna ferruginea) can be observed breeding.
